Hana database Backup Types :
Hana database Backup Types theoretical knowledge :
In This Blog, we will explain the Hana database backup types , Backup details , Hana database recovery mode types and over view details.
Before Hana database Backup Types theoretical knowledge, We will understand the knowledge of the Hana database.
Please check below blog for Hana database administrator tasks:
1. Hana database installation
2. Hana database Backup configuration
3. Hana Log volume full situation
- Before Hana database configuration, we will understand the Hana database Backup details.
- Based on requirement, we will configure the Hana Database Backups.
- Normally, weekly once Full database will be scheduled.
- Daily differential or incremental backup will be scheduled.
- Depending system Log Backup will be schedule every 15mins, 30mins, …..depending on requirement.
There are two types of Backups exists on SAP :
1. Data Backup
2. Log Backup
Hana database Backup Types theoretical knowledge :
1. Data Backup
In SAP there are two types of data backup has exists.
I. Full Data backup
II. Delta Backup.
1. Full Data Backup:
• Data backup contains the all the data that is required to recover the database to a consistent state.
• A data backup contains both business and administrative data.
• Administrative data can be roles, models, information models, and topology information of SAP system. With a data backup, only the actual data is backed up.
• Depends on database size the database backup will run and complete.
2. Delta Backup:
• Delta backups back up only data that has been changed since the last full data backup or the last delta backup.
• Delta backups allow you to reduce the amount of data that is backed up, compared to full data backups.
• In turn, this means that delta backups are normally faster to create than full data backups. In addition, a database recovery using delta backups is normally faster than with log backups.
• With delta backups, only the changed data is recovered, whereas with log backups, each log entry needs to be processed separately before it is recovered.
• There 2 type:
1. Incremental Backup
2. Differential Backup
Incremental Backup:
• These backups only store data changes since the last data backup (either the last data backup or the last delta backup).
• Incremental backups are faster and require less storage space than full backups but restoring data from incremental backups can be more time consuming because each incremental backup since the last full backup needs to be processed.
ii. Differential Backup: :
• These backups store data changes since the last full backup, irrespective of other differential or incremental backups that have occurred.
• It requires more storage space than incremental backups, they offer faster data recovery times as they only need the last full backup and the last differential backup for a restore operations.
2.Log Backup:
• The Redo Log is a critical component in HANA system, capturing all changes made to the database.
• Regular backups of the Logs are crucial for database recovery to the most recent committed transaction in the event of a database failure.
• Log backups help in ensuring minimal data loss during a recovery scenario.
RECOVERY Types:
We can restore the Hana database backup through below recovery types.
1. Most recent state
2. Point in time
3. Specific Data backup
Depending situation and requirement, we can perform the Hana database recovery for below state.
There are three Type of Recovery in Hana
1. Most Recent State:
• Used for recovering the database to the time as close as possible to the current time. For this recovery, the data backup and log backup must be available since last data backup and log area are required to perform.
2. Point in Time:
• Used for recovering the database to the specific point in time. For this recovery, the data backup and log backup must be available since last data backup and log area are required to perform.
3. Specific Data Backup:
• Used for recovering the database to a specified data backup.
